For standard pulling applications, take maximum weight of pulled object and divide by 2. For example, maximum weight of boat, including motor, fuel, and gear is 2,800 lbs we would divide that by 2 and would come up with 1,400 lbs. Therefore we would use a T1500 winch that is rated up to 1,500 lbs. If used on a boat that will be pulled through shallow water or a steep launch, we would divide maximum weight by 1.5 instead of 2.
